The Challenge
In the northern part of Erfurt, the capital of Thuringia, the Gera River faced significant ecological and hydrological challenges. The goal was to restore ecological continuity, improve the watercourse structure in line with the EU Water Framework Directive, ensure safe floodwater discharge, and create near-natural riverbanks. The area’s complex infrastructure, including a dense network of underground pipes, added to the difficulty of implementing sustainable and resilient water management solutions.
The Solution
Tractebel developed a comprehensive redesign of the Gera River’s course, tailored to the site’s specific conditions. The project prioritized ecological restoration while seamlessly integrating the new riverbed into the surrounding green spaces. These green areas form the northern boundary of Erfurt’s continuous belt of parks and recreational zones, enhancing both environmental quality and urban liveability. The design not only meets regulatory requirements but also strengthens the city’s natural landscape and recreational infrastructure.
The Impact
The transformation of this previously regulated section of the Gera River has resulted in a dynamic, ecologically valuable watercourse that complies with EU standards. The project has revitalized the area, improving flood resilience and biodiversity while enriching the urban environment. It stands as a successful example of how ecological restoration and urban planning can work hand in hand to create sustainable, multifunctional public spaces.
