October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, making it a fitting time to highlight a voluntary initiative led by our colleagues. On their own time, they contributed their expertise to support ONCIA Community in developing a concept for integrative cancer care centres.

A small contribution to a meaningful mission

Working on a voluntary basis, Philippe Damhaut, Adrien Thiberghien and Alexander Bobyr produced detailed 2D plans and a 3D model of a facility designed to host non-medical support[DC1.1][MG1.2] services for people living with cancer and their loved ones. They also produced a 3D animation video, helping to bring the concept to life and provide a visual reference for future developments.

Supporting ONCIA Community with 2D and 3D design expertise

To develop the model, our colleagues visited several similar facilities in Belgium, the United Kingdom and Spain, drawing inspiration from existing best practices. The result is a proposed standardized house concept that can help ONCIA Community explore how welcoming, non-clinical environments can support people affected by cancer alongside traditional medical treatment.

Creating spaces for holistic care

ONCIA Community helps hospitals create these spaces. By combining thoughtful design with connection opportunities, green spaces, and wellbeing services, these centres aim to provide a comforting environment throughout the cancer journey.

While Tractebel’s contribution represents only a small part of this broader initiative, it is a great example of using professional skills to support a meaningful cause. The project demonstrates how engineering, architecture and design expertise can contribute to creating environments that foster health, hope and recovery.
