Extending Luxembourg’s free tram line

20 Jan 2021

Luxembourg made history last year as the first country in the world to offer free public transportation nationwide. The tramway network planned by Luxtram aims to meet the growing need for low-carbon mobility resulting from the country’s strong socio-economic development.

In early 2020, Tractebel was delighted to be among the winning Design & Build Consortium for section C of the tramway network in Luxembourg. Together with the Consortium members, the Urban team of Tractebel in Belgium is looking forward to continuing the collaboration with Luxtram to deliver an additional 1.2-km transport infrastructure segment - part of the 16.2-km tram network - with two new tram stations, including the multimodal exchange hub “Lycée Bonnevoie” in 2022.

Green light on new tram segment

The first important design milestone was reached last December, with tremendous efforts from all stakeholders. As a result, the project will begin on time in early 2021.

On track for a greener future

The works to be performed by the Consortium for section C include all the systems required for tramway operation: infrastructure (railroads and platforms, overhead contact line, shunting area, tramway and multitubulars), equipment (remote monitoring & control systems, railway signaling, traffic lights, transformer station, etc.) and related infrastructures such as stations, areas adjacent to the carriageway, drivers’ control room and underground substation. The consortium is made of Contractors Sopinor and Frateur-De Pourcq, with Tecna, Tractebel and HAS as part of the design team.

The  Luxtram project is part of the Grand Duchy’s groundbreaking mobility strategy, a win-win initiative that encourages greener mobility alternatives while easing the financial burden on lower-income passengers.

“In March 2020, the Luxembourgish government introduced free mobility by giving access to its entire public transport network, free of charge. For all. A bold decision that will contribute to better mobility, especially in cities. Through our involvement in the construction of the new tram network, we are delighted to contribute to the future of mobility in Luxembourg, share our experience of integrated urban tramway development and to collaborate with such an imaginative Client.”
