Colossal Belo Monte Transmission Line begins commercial operation

25 Jan 2018

Latin America’s first ± 800kV UHVDC transmission line, connecting the 11,233 MW Belo Monte hydropower plant to the Southeast region of Brazil, has recently begun commercial operation. Tractebel is proud to be part of this great achievement.

The line’s first transmission bipole, with 2,077km of extension crossing four Brazilian states, was inaugurated last December, benefiting around 22 million people. A second bipole, with 2,520 km, is already under construction and tests are expected to be carried out in the first half of 2019.

Tractebel, which holds a leading position in the Brazilian electrical systems sector, has delivered its expertise on this monumental project since 2014, developing civil, electrical and electromechanical design studies for part of both bipole stretches.
