Tarali Pumped Storage Project (1500 MW)

Challenge

Adani Renewable Energy One Limited selected the Tarali site in Maharashtra to develop a 1,500 MW pumped storage hydropower project, designed to provide large-scale energy storage and support the integration of renewable generation. The scheme comprises upper and lower reservoirs connected by a waterway system, a 22 m-wide underground powerhouse equipped with reversible pump-turbine units, and associated civil, hydraulic and electro-mechanical infrastructure. The site’s complex topography and geological conditions, combined with the need for precise hydraulic balancing between the two reservoirs, called for specialised expertise in pumped storage design and engineering.

Solution

Tractebel provides multidisciplinary engineering expertise throughout key stages of the Tarali Pumped Storage Project. Its scope covers validation of the basic engineering, review of the detailed engineering and construction supervision. Drawing on its experience in hydropower and pumped storage schemes, Tractebel supports the optimisation and technical validation of the project’s civil, hydraulic and electro-mechanical infrastructure, helping ensure that the different components are effectively integrated within this large-scale energy storage facility.

Impact

With 1,500 MW of grid-scale energy storage capacity, the Tarali project will help store surplus electricity from renewable sources such as solar and wind and make it available when demand is higher. This flexibility will support grid reliability while helping reduce the curtailment of renewable generation. As a long-life infrastructure asset with no fuel requirements and very low operational emissions, the project will contribute to a more flexible and resilient electricity system and facilitate the integration of increasing volumes of renewable energy.
