Challenge

Kerala is seeking to accelerate its transition towards a low-carbon energy system by increasing the contribution of renewable energy to both generation and consumption. Achieving this ambition requires a comprehensive roadmap that considers not only renewable energy potential, but also the roles of key stakeholders, the legal and regulatory framework, viable business models and the technical feasibility of future projects. A particular challenge was to identify suitable opportunities for floating solar photovoltaic (FSPV) development across the state’s water bodies, while assessing site conditions, environmental and social considerations, potential offtakers and the approvals required to turn renewable energy potential into viable projects.

Solution

Tractebel developed a renewable energy roadmap for the state of Kerala, combining strategic planning with technical and commercial assessments. The scope included pre-feasibility studies for floating solar projects and the identification of at least 500 MW of potential FSPV developments across various water bodies. Tractebel also assessed opportunities related to green hydrogen and electric mobility, mapped relevant stakeholders and regulatory requirements, and developed business models incorporating potential offtakers and cost-benefit considerations. Together, these activities provide a structured framework for translating Kerala’s renewable energy ambitions into actionable projects.

Impact

Tractebel’s multidisciplinary engineering and advisory services support Kerala’s ambition to transition towards a 100% renewable energy state by 2040. By combining a state-wide renewable energy roadmap with the identification of potential floating solar capacity, emerging opportunities in green hydrogen and electric mobility, and appropriate business models, the assignment provides a strategic foundation for future clean energy development. It also helps create the technical, regulatory and commercial conditions needed to advance renewable energy projects and support Kerala’s broader transition towards a low-carbon economy.

The Group 1 BESS Project in Saudi Arabia consists of four massive 4 X 500MW/2000MWhr Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). By providing 8000MWhr of total combined storage, this infrastructure is pivotal for stabilizing the power grid and accelerating the Kingdom's transition to a sustainable, renewable-heavy energy mix.
