The Challenge
To support the operational readiness of the Belgian Defense’s A400M aircraft fleet, a new maintenance hangar was required. The challenge was to design a highly functional, large-span structure capable of accommodating three aircraft simultaneously—without any internal columns—while meeting strict technical, acoustic, fire safety, and energy performance standards.
The Solution
Tractebel contributed to this Design-Build-Finance-Maintain (DBFM) project in partnership with Democo (contractor) and architects Kardham and Styfhals. Our multidisciplinary team was responsible for the design of MEP systems, structural engineering, infrastructure (including roads, apron, and sewerage), and EPB compliance. We also provided consultancy on fire strategy (active and passive protection) and acoustic performance, ensuring the facility meets all operational and regulatory requirements.
The Impact
The resulting hangar offers a flexible, column-free space tailored for the maintenance of up to three A400M aircraft, supporting efficient workflows and future adaptability. Tractebel’s integrated engineering approach ensured the delivery of a high-performance facility that enhances the sustainability and functionality of Belgium’s defense infrastructure.
