The Challenge

The operation and maintenance of emergency generators at data centres can lead to atmospheric emissions that must comply with strict environmental regulations. For RED Data Centres, located at two sites, the challenge was to assess the dispersion of these emissions and ensure compliance with both Emission Limit Values (ELVs) and Air Quality Standards, while maintaining operational readiness of critical backup systems.

The Solution

Tractebel conducted advanced atmospheric dispersion modelling for both sites, simulating the release of pollutants during maintenance activities. The study evaluated ground-level concentrations under various meteorological conditions and compared them against applicable regulatory thresholds. This modelling provided a detailed compliance assessment and supported the environmental permitting process.

The Impact

Tractebel’s work enabled RED Data Centres to demonstrate environmental compliance while ensuring the reliability of their emergency power systems. The modelling results support transparent communication with authorities, reduce regulatory risks, and contribute to the sustainable operation of critical digital infrastructure.
