The Challenge
The Materialenkaai project seeks to transform a former industrial quay into a dynamic and inclusive waterfront park. Strategically located along the Brussels canal, the site marks the transition between the city and Molenbeek and sits at the edge of a dense, multicultural neighborhood with limited public space. This area serves as a vital link between the canal, the Tour & Taxis district, and the port. The ambition of BELIRIS and Brussels Environment is to create a park with metropolitan significance, strengthening both local and regional public space networks.
The Solution
Tractebel’s design introduces a generous promenade along the canal, intersected by transversal connections to Havenlaan. This wide quay acts as a cohesive public space, seamlessly linking the canal with adjacent neighborhoods. The layout alternates between lively, high-activity zones and quieter, contemplative areas, creating a varied landscape of gardens and recreational spaces. Key features include a multi-sports cage, a skate park, a garden area, and an open meadow with a wooden deck, offering opportunities for both programmed and spontaneous activities.
The Impact
Materialenkaai has evolved into a vibrant public space that contributes to the broader transformation of urban life in Brussels. The park harmonizes historical references with a forward-looking green vision, fostering a welcoming environment for all. It enhances public access to the canal and encourages social interaction, becoming a landmark destination that attracts visitors from across the city. By promoting inclusivity and connectivity, the project strengthens community ties and establishes a sense of belonging in the heart of Brussels.
