Challenge

The client is planning the development of a large-scale wind-solar hybrid power project of up to 20 GW in Gujarat, India, combining renewable generation with battery energy storage and gas-based power generation. At this unprecedented scale, integrating variable wind and solar resources while maintaining reliable and predictable power delivery presents significant technical and economic challenges. The project therefore required a comprehensive assessment of site conditions, grid connectivity, technology options and energy storage requirements to optimise power dispatch, manage peak demand and ensure the effective integration of renewable energy into the regional grid.

Solution

Tractebel carried out a comprehensive feasibility study covering the project’s electrical systems and subsystems, including Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) analysis. The scope included site assessment, accessibility and connectivity studies, power evacuation and grid integration options, as well as technology selection for inverters, batteries, transformers and control systems. Tractebel also assessed different configurations for integrating wind, solar, battery storage and gas-based generation, including a comparison of AC and DC integration solutions. Through hourly simulations of wind and solar generation, the study supported the sizing of energy storage and optimisation of power dispatch, peak-demand management, grid reliability, voltage support and levelised cost of energy (LCOE). Tractebel also prepared a detailed business plan to support the project’s development.

Impact

Tractebel’s feasibility study provided the client with a technical and economic framework for developing a large-scale integrated renewable energy project. By evaluating the optimal combination of wind, solar, battery storage and gas-based generation, the study supports informed decisions on plant configuration, storage sizing, grid integration and power dispatch. The proposed approach is designed to improve the predictability and reliability of renewable power delivery, optimise the project’s LCOE and help reduce exposure to Deviation Settlement Mechanism (DSM) penalties. Ultimately, the study establishes a robust basis for progressing a major hybrid renewable energy development capable of integrating large volumes of wind and solar generation into the grid.
