The Challenge
The project presents a significant logistical and technical challenge: expanding and electrifying an operational bus depot—installing approximately 110 DC chargers—and constructing a new adjacent maintenance workshop, all while ensuring uninterrupted operation of the existing facility. Coordinating construction activities across multiple phases without disrupting daily depot functions requires meticulous planning, phased execution, and innovative solutions. The complexity is further heightened by the integration of large-scale electric vehicle infrastructure, which demands careful alignment of civil works, electrical systems, and operational logistics within a constrained and active site.
The Solution
To meet the complex requirements of expanding and electrifying the bus depot while maintaining uninterrupted operations, Tractebel’s engineers implemented a smart, phased design strategy. They ensured that all critical elements remained functional from the start of construction through to the final phase by opting for prefabricated structural solutions and scalable technical systems. These were deployed in clearly defined phases and dedicated areas, carefully aligned with the client’s planning and operational needs. This approach minimized disruption, enhanced efficiency, and allowed for seamless integration of new infrastructure into the existing depot environment.
The Impact
Tractebel’s impact on the bus depot expansion project has been instrumental in ensuring operational continuity and supporting the transition to sustainable mobility. Thanks to their strategic planning and engineering expertise, STIB’s public transport services from the existing depot have continued without significant disruption, despite ongoing construction and infrastructure upgrades. The electrification of the depot is already operational—even with a temporary high-voltage power supply—enabling the gradual replacement of diesel buses with electric ones. This seamless integration of new systems into a live environment highlights Tractebel’s ability to deliver complex infrastructure projects with minimal impact on day-to-day operations.
Thanks to this new bus depot, the mass replacement of diesel buses with electric buses is underway, and will ultimately enable STIB to operate more than 225 fully electric buses from this depot.
