The historic course of the Demer River through Diest town centre has been restored. The river was almost completely filled in in the 1960s, with the water being diverted into a canal around the old town walls. This project has provided a new dimension to the city with a completely different look of its public areas. Using a harmonised design for all the public spaces along the Demer has given a new, unified structure to the town’s appearance.
