Upgrading the Trans-European Rail Network to boost capacity between Germany and Austria
The increased capacity will result in a significant shift from road to rail, contributing to the region’s emissions reduction goals. Our experts, together with our partner, are leading the design and planning of the structures and traffic system.
ABS 38, part of the Trans-European Network’s Paris-Munich-Vienna-Bratislava corridor, is currently a single line between Munich, Germany and Salzburg in Austria. Located in southeast Bavaria, line 5723 will be upgraded to a double track. The project includes electrification of the 9 km section between Mühldorf and Freilassing in Bavaira, Germany. The expansion will provide more frequent, reliable, and efficient connections for local and long-distance passenger and freight transport.
Planning the structures and traffic system
As part of a joint venture with partner Obermeyer Infrastructure GmbH & Co. KG, our railway and infrastructure experts are responsible for the structural engineering works (twelve bridge structures, and retaining and noise protection walls as needed) and the design and planning of the traffic system (rail and street). The mandate also includes project, structural and construction planning, and noise and vibration protection measures.
In addition, Tractebel and Obermeyer are planning the remodeling of the Freilassing station and two additional stops in Surheim and Freilassing Nord with associated external platforms and access structures. Plans are currently underway and are expected to be completed in 2026. The stations will be planned using Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology.
Platform design for the Freilassing station upgrade
“For a carbon-neutral future, it is important to transport more people and goods by rail. The project improves the capacity of rail connections for sustainable and environmentally friendly transport to Austria, Hungary and Romania. We are happy to contribute our knowledge and experience to this goal.”
