First wind turbines in pioneering project in Egypt

17 Sep 2019

The first 100 wind turbines grid has been connected at 262.5 MW Ras Ghareb wind Farm. The project team successfully achieved this ahead of schedule. The wind farm fulfils a pioneering role in the Egyptian wind energy market as it is the first privately financed renewable project in Egypt. Tractebel has been the mandated owner's engineer for the consortium, in which ENGIE is involved, since 2015.

The Egyptian government is aiming to increase the share of renewables in the energy mix, with a target wind generation capacity of 7 GW by 2022. The plan envisions significant private sector involvement, with the private sector taking the lead with more than 60% share of the plan.

Government invited tenders for Ras Ghareb BOO wind farm. The first privately financed project. The wind farm is located on the Gulf of Suez, an optimum site with more than 60% gross capacity factor. Flat desert terrain and strong winds with low turbulence characterise the site close to the Red Sea. This pioneering project consists of 125 Siemens Gamesa G97 wind turbines. The Balance of Plant works including road building and a 220 kV / 33 kV substation, are carried out by Orascom Construction.

Experienced partners

The Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy of the Arab Republic of Egypt, in collaboration with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company ("EETC"), selected a consortium comprised of ENGIE, Toyota Tsusho, Eurus Energy and Orascom Construction. Tractebel is providing consulting services for the project as the consortium’s mandated owner's engineer. It took the experienced wind energy specialists no more than just a few weeks to draw up the documents for the successful IPP tender (Independent Power Producer) in 2015. They also prepared the tender documents and provided support on the contract negotiations with turbine suppliers and contractors for the Balance of Plant works during the development phase. During the construction phase, which started at the end of 2017, they are responsible for detailed design review and construction management. The Tractebel team is currently on location at the construction site. The experts are responsible for contract management, work safety and quality control for the civil engineering structures, electrical works and wind turbines through to acceptance.

Tractebel is providing consulting services as owner’s engineer for the execution of the Ras Ghareb wind farm.
