Driving energy transition in Brazil

08 Mar 2018

Tractebel is developing in partnership with PSR a study to indicate the way forward to integrate variable renewable energy sources in Brazil's energy matrix.

Tractebel experts from Germany (Lahmeyer International), Belgium and Brazil, together with the Brazilian consultancy company PSR, are developing the project entitled “Energy systems of the future: Integrating variable renewable energy sources in Brazil's energy matrix.” The study will focus on wind, solar and the combination of these sources with energy storage.

The project is innovative in Brazil because it will take into account the expansion and operation planning of the country's electricity system in an integrated way, presenting quantitative results obtained via simulations carried out using state-of-the-art computational tools developed by Tractebel and PSR.

The study, which is expected to be concluded in 12 months, is funded by the German Cooperation for Sustainable Development, through the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit – GIZ, within the framework of a cooperation agreement between Brazil and Germany. The beneficiaries are the EPE (Energy Research Office, linked to the Ministry of Mines and Energy) and the ONS (National Independent System Operator).

“This is a very important project to modernise Brazil’s electrical power sector and we are proud to be part of it together with PSR. It perfectly fits Tractebel’s vision to be a leading engineering company in the energy transition,” says Leonardo Rese, Power System Expert at Tractebel in Brazil.
