The Challenge

Structural traffic congestion toward Brussels continues to grow year after year, creating significant mobility challenges for the Flemish periphery. Brabantnet addresses these issues by introducing three new tram lines: the express tram from Willebroek to Brussels, the ring trambus connecting Brussels Airport to Heysel via Vilvoorde, and the airport tram linking Brussels North to Brussels Airport. These lines aim to close critical gaps in the rail and regional express networks, improve intermodal exchanges, and promote active mobility—all while enhancing public spaces and creating sustainable, high-quality connections between municipalities.

The Solution

Brabantnet adopts an integrated approach that combines high-performance public transport with improvements to landscapes, networks, and local communities. The project revitalizes municipalities along its routes by removing physical barriers, completing bicycle networks, upgrading public spaces, and restoring ecological corridors. The express tram along the A12 leverages light rail infrastructure to create green corridors and multifunctional station squares, strategically placed to become new focal points for village centers. Seven pedestrian and cycling bridges reconnect communities across the A12, while the airport tram transforms Leopold III Avenue into a green boulevard with consistent architecture and tree-lined streets. The ring trambus enhances connectivity in densely built areas, improving both mobility and urban quality.

The Impact

Brabantnet will significantly improve regional mobility and quality of life in the Brussels periphery. By integrating sustainable transport with urban and ecological enhancements, the project creates vibrant, accessible environments that encourage active mobility and interconnectivity. Serving as a catalyst for spatial and sustainable development, Brabantnet strengthens ties between municipalities and transforms the area into a dynamic interface between city and hinterland—delivering long-term benefits for residents, businesses, and the environment.
