The Challenge

Gent Sint-Pieters station, originally built for the 1913 World Exhibition, became a catalyst for urban growth in Ghent. Over a century later, the station and its surroundings require adaptation to meet modern needs. Designated as a “mixed development pool for living and working” under the Spatial Structure Plan for Flanders, the area faces the challenge of creating a high-quality urban environment that integrates housing, offices, leisure, and green spaces. Underutilized plots and vacant lands must be transformed into vibrant spaces, with Rijsenbergpark playing a central role in reconnecting the neighborhood and enhancing livability.

The Solution

Tractebel’s approach focuses on redefining Rijsenbergpark as a green anchor within the station district. The design introduces a multifunctional park that blends ecological value with social utility, offering spaces for relaxation, recreation, and community activities. Pathways and landscaping ensure seamless connections between new developments and existing neighborhoods, while public amenities foster accessibility and inclusivity. By integrating greenery into the urban fabric, the project creates a balanced environment that supports both mobility and quality of life.

The Impact

The revitalization of Rijsenbergpark will transform the Gent Sint-Pieters station area into a more attractive and sustainable urban district. The park provides a green oasis amid dense development, improving environmental quality and promoting social cohesion. Enhanced public spaces and amenities encourage interaction and active lifestyles, while the integration of nature strengthens climate resilience. This project exemplifies how thoughtful design can convert underused land into a vibrant, multifunctional space that enriches the city’s public realm and meets 21st-century urban demands.
