The Challenge

The Sigmaplan is an ambitious initiative to protect the Scheldt estuary region from floods while enhancing the natural ecosystem. Distributed across multiple project areas along the tidal Scheldt river and its tributaries, this plan addresses the dual challenges of flood protection and ecological resilience. De Vlaamse Waterweg nv is responsible for the preparation and realisation of the Sigmaplan, a critical undertaking for safeguarding Flanders against storm surges and ensuring sustainable development.

The Solution

IMDC and Tractebel provide comprehensive support to De Vlaamse Waterweg nv in executing the Sigmaplan. Their expertise spans agenda setting, preparation—including extensive hydrologic and hydraulic modelling—realisation, monitoring, and process management. Together, these efforts ensure the successful delivery of this multifaceted initiative.

The Impact

The Impact Tractebel’s expertise has been pivotal in advancing the Sigmaplan, with contributions spanning hydrologic and hydraulic modelling, strategic planning, and process management. These efforts have played a key role in the successful completion of over 20 projects since 2003 and continue to drive progress on the 15 projects set for the coming years. By shaping innovative and sustainable solutions, Tractebel has helped protect Flanders from flood risks while strengthening the ecological resilience of the Scheldt estuary.
