The Challenge

The site of the former post office in Aalst, Belgium, was in need of revitalization as part of the broader master plan “Filatures & Urban Fabric(s): Aalst station environment.” The challenge was to preserve the historical character of the main building and its annexe while transforming the area into a modern, functional space that meets contemporary urban and commercial needs.

The Solution

The redevelopment was carried out in two phases. The first phase involved the careful demolition of non-essential structures, the renovation of the historic main building and annexe, and the construction of an underground car park with capacity for 230 vehicles. In the second phase, two new buildings were added, covering a total area of 12,500 m². The result is a vibrant mixed-use site that blends modern office and retail spaces with the preserved industrial heritage of Aalst. Tractebel was responsible for the MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) studies and oversaw the Energy Performance and Indoor Climate (EPIC) strategy for the entire complex.

The Impact

The project has breathed new life into a historically significant site, creating a dynamic and sustainable urban space. By combining heritage preservation with modern functionality, the redevelopment enhances the city’s architectural landscape while offering improved comfort, energy efficiency, and usability for its occupants. Tractebel’s technical expertise ensured that the complex meets high standards of performance and environmental quality.
