The Challenge

Since 1934, the Niederfinow boat lift has served as a vital link between Berlin and the Baltic Sea port of Szczecin, connecting the apex of the Havel-Oder waterway with its lower section leading to the Oder. Over time, the aging facility became a bottleneck for inland waterway transport, limiting efficiency and capacity. A replacement was necessary to meet modern transport demands while preserving the historical significance of the site.

The Solution

Tractebel contributed to the planning and execution of the new ship lift—an exceptional engineering structure with a lifting height of 36 meters. The design features a slim counterweight hoist system with a total drive power of just 1,280 kW, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional shaft locks or lock flights. The project involved a wide range of disciplines, including engineering, architecture, landscape planning, environmental services, and technical equipment. Inspired by the hall church of nearby Chorin Abbey, the lift’s design harmonizes functionality with architectural elegance, showcasing the collaborative achievement of numerous trades and experts.

The Impact

The new ship lift has significantly enhanced the efficiency of inland waterway transport in the region, supporting sustainable logistics and economic growth. Its striking design and historical context have also made it a major tourist attraction, drawing nearly 200,000 visitors annually. In recognition of its engineering excellence and cultural value, the New Ship’s Hoist Niederfinow was nominated for the German Engineering Award in 2024. The project stands as a landmark example of innovation, sustainability, and heritage integration.
