The Challenge
The project faced the complex task of crossing the town of Spa towards Marteau while ensuring the delivery of high-quality infrastructure. The main challenge was to achieve this without significantly reducing parking availability and while minimizing urban waterproofing, which is essential for sustainable water management in densely built environments.
The Solution
To address these constraints, Tractebel collaborated closely with an architectural firm to design an innovative and environmentally conscious solution. The approach included creating permeable parking spaces to maintain functionality while reducing surface impermeability. Additionally, a separating swale was integrated between the cycle route and the national road to collect rainwater, enhancing stormwater management and promoting ecological balance.
The Impact
This development marks the first step in establishing a comprehensive network of cycle paths across Wallonia. Ultimately, it will connect Spa to La Vesdrienne at Pepinster, fostering sustainable mobility and encouraging greener transportation options for the region.
