The Challenge

Located next to a historic power plant built in the 1920s, the new hydropower facility was designed to significantly increase energy output while preserving the architectural integrity of the site. By raising the dam target at the inlet to the power plant canal and increasing the expansion discharge, the goal was to boost the installed capacity from 84 MW to approximately 118 MW. The challenge was to modernize the infrastructure while maintaining harmony with the existing heritage structures and ensuring effective flood management.

The Solution

Tractebel supported the integration of the new hydropower plant into the original site through a carefully planned design that balances technical performance and visual coherence. Flood relief is managed via turbine idle run and a pre-regulation system at the canal inlet. The new construction complements the historic ensemble, creating a unified and functional landscape. Advanced engineering solutions were applied to optimize water flow and energy generation while respecting the site’s environmental and architectural context.

The Impact

The upgraded hydropower plant now delivers significantly higher capacity, contributing to renewable energy production while preserving the character of the original facility. The seamless integration of new and old structures enhances both operational efficiency and visual appeal. This project demonstrates Tractebel’s ability to combine innovation with heritage preservation, supporting sustainable energy goals without compromising cultural value.
