The Challenge

The construction of a new barrage in Greifswald-Wieck was classified as a top-priority measure in the General Plan for Coastal and Flood Protection in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern due to the high flood risk in the region. The challenge was to design a structure that would not only provide robust flood protection under increasingly harsh climatic conditions and rising sea levels, but also integrate sensitively into the urban and historical context of the coastal city.

The Solution

Tractebel led the planning and design of the barrage with a strong focus on urban integration and architectural harmony. The project required a multidisciplinary approach to ensure technical excellence and aesthetic compatibility with the surrounding environment. The result is a structure that combines functionality with thoughtful design, earning the German Engineering Award in 2016 for its innovative and context-sensitive execution.

The Impact

The new barrage is now a key element of Greifswald’s flood defence system, offering reliable protection against coastal flooding and climate-related risks. Beyond its technical performance, the structure enhances the urban landscape and contributes to the city’s resilience. This project exemplifies Tractebel’s ability to deliver infrastructure that balances engineering precision with environmental and cultural sensitivity.
