The Challenge

The aging Hahnenhügelbrücke, a nearly 300-meter-long street bridge crossing the River Main in Schweinfurt, requires complete replacement due to structural damage and increasing traffic loads. This major infrastructure upgrade also necessitates the renovation and adaptation of adjacent traffic facilities, including entrance and exit ramps on the eastern junction. Temporary structures will be essential during the construction phase to maintain traffic flow and safety. At the same time, the project must comply with strict environmental and nature conservation regulations, given the ecological sensitivity of the surrounding area.

The Solution

Tractebel conducted extensive biodiversity assessments to ensure compliance with national and European species protection laws. The project area hosts potential habitats for protected species such as the sand lizard (Lacerta agilis), dormice, bats, wild bees, and xylobiont beetles. Environmental studies included bird territory mapping, visual monitoring of reptiles, targeted surveys using nesting tubes and thermal imaging, and habitat mapping for insects and amphibians. These investigations informed a comprehensive environmental strategy, ensuring that construction activities would not significantly disturb or harm protected species or their habitats.

The Impact

The bridge replacement project is being carefully aligned with nature conservation legislation to preserve the area’s biodiversity. A tailored plan of measures will guide construction activities, ensuring legal compliance and ecological integrity. This approach enables the necessary infrastructure renewal while safeguarding valuable habitats, demonstrating Tractebel’s commitment to sustainable development and responsible engineering.
