The Challenge
For over 50 years, Tractebel nuclear experts have supported the EDF Group in designing and operating the French nuclear fleet and building reactors in France and abroad. In 2021, EDF chose Tractebel to help unlock the potential of Small Modular Reactors (SMR) in France and abroad. Specifically, EDF challenged us to explore the feasibility of building its innovative Nuward design involving a Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR), the first SMR technology developed in the EU.
The Solution
Over 50 Tractebel experts were dedicated to the preliminary design phase, exploring Nuward’s ability to ensure safety and security of supply for potential buyers as well as costs that stayed on budget and time. Ultimately, our expert advice contributed to EDF’s decision to invest in an SMR product based on more mature technology that could still enable France to meet its decarbonisation goals.
The Impact
When complete with more mature SMR technology, the small modular power plant will produce reliable, low-carbon energy for France that can:
- Replace coal-fired power plants with outputs between 300 and 400 MWe
- Ensure load following to complement renewable energies
- Supply remote regions and industrial sites with high energy consumption
I think Tractebel can bring its understanding fo the market, its flexibility and adaptability to a market that is evolving quickly and the international approach.
