The Challenge
The existing VRT building no longer complied with modern construction standards, limiting its ability to support the evolving needs of a dynamic media landscape. To maintain its position as a competitive and forward-thinking broadcaster, VRT made the strategic decision to construct a completely new facility—one that aligns with today’s functional requirements and anticipates future innovations in media production and broadcasting.
The Solution
As part of the Design and Build consortium, Tractebel took on the role of integral engineering partner for the new VRT building. Our multidisciplinary expertise covered structural engineering, electrical systems, sanitary installations, fire safety, acoustics, and energy solutions—including geothermal systems and the GRO sustainability meter. We also ensured the building’s sustainability performance and were responsible for the design of the data centre, a critical component of VRT’s digital infrastructure.
The Impact
The result is a compact, high-performance building that harmoniously integrates with its natural surroundings while maintaining a minimal ecological footprint. Thanks to Tractebel’s comprehensive engineering approach, the new VRT headquarters not only meets stringent sustainability goals but also provides a future-proof environment that supports innovation and operational excellence in public broadcasting.
An compact, open and dynamic media centre is designed where creativity is key. The building is exemplary in terms of user comfort, energy efficiency and adaptability.
