The Challenge
Built between 1908 and 1913, the Malter Dam is a historic gravity dam in the Eastern Ore Mountains, serving flood protection, recreation, and hydropower. To restore flood safety, it was necessary to lower the collecting channel bed and construct a second channel.
The Solution
The core of the upgrade is a new air-side dividing structure that pressurizes the existing channel and activates the new one during high discharges. The secondary dam was restored and made overflowable, enabling automated flood control. A dam embrasure with geosynthetic concrete mats was built for efficient erosion control and sealing.
The Impact
The expanded drainage capacity prevents overflow during extreme rainfall, significantly improving flood safety for the downstream region and adapting the infrastructure to future climate risks.
