The Challenge

Ivory Coast faces the pressing need to bring reliable electricity access to underserved communities, with approximately 350 localities currently lacking service. Despite strong national growth in generation capacity, the distribution network remained fragmented, limiting socio-economic development in rural and peri-urban areas. The challenge was to extend and reinforce the urban distribution infrastructure efficiently, ensuring that utility-scale investments translate into tangible benefits for residents and businesses across diverse regions.

The Solution

Tractebel delivered a comprehensive suite of engineering and consultancy services to support this critical expansion. The team reviewed and enhanced existing feasibility studies, prepared detailed Requests for Proposals, and provided robust support during the competitive tendering phase. Parallel to this, Tractebel conducted Environmental & Social Impact studies to ensure sustainable implementation. Throughout the construction process, the company monitored and supervised works, guaranteeing compliance with technical specifications and social safeguards, and paving the way for a resilient and inclusive energy network.

The Impact

By laying a strong foundation for the extension of the electricity distribution network, Tractebel has enabled reliable power access in hundreds of communities, unlocking socio-economic opportunities—such as improved lighting, local refrigeration, and small businesses—and advancing national electrification goals. Projects of this scale complement initiatives like the African Development Bank’s rural electrification programme, which has connected thousands of households and public services in similar contexts. Tractebel’s end-to-end engagement ensured that expansion efforts are not only technically sound but also environmentally and socially responsible, reinforcing Ivory Coast’s transition toward equitable and sustainable energy access.
