The Challenge

Designing and delivering a navigation lock of 195 m in length, 12.5 m in width and a 6.41 m drop within a protected ecological corridor demands precision engineering and rigorous environmental stewardship. The canal crosses an area where the footprint must be compensated threefold—for every tree felled, three are replanted—while the project also requires two diversions of the Oise River (the “rescinding” of the Oise) and re-routing of roadways with new civil structures. Beyond these site-specific constraints, the canal itself is a large and complex hydraulic infrastructure of a kind not built in France for decades, imposing exceptional requirements on design integration, permitting, stakeholder coordination, and construction risk management.

The Solution

Tractebel mobilizes agile, multidisciplinary teams capable of continual adaptation to technical and regulatory uncertainties, especially environmental conditions that evolve with seasons, habitats, and monitoring outcomes. Our approach couples advanced digital engineering (BIM-enabled coordination, scenario modeling, and rapid design iteration) with field-proven project controls and environmental management plans. Short feedback loops between design offices, ecological experts, and construction teams allow timely mitigation measures—such as habitat compensation phasing, river diversion sequencing, and traffic management around new structures—ensuring decisions remain data-driven, compliant, and safely executable throughout delivery.

The Impact

By 2032, the SeineNord Europe Canal—107 km long and 54 m wide—will connect Compiègne (Oise) to AubencheulauBac (Nord) as a cornerstone of the Seine–Scheldt link, integrating France with 20,000 km of European waterways. Tractebel’s solution helps realize a project that combines technical performance, environmental protection, and safety, unlocking a step change in river freight transport—a lowcarbon alternative that strengthens industrial competitiveness and enhances the attractiveness of regions. The canal’s capacity and reliability will shift cargo from road to water, reduce emissions, and catalyze sustainable territorial development across Northern France and the wider European network.
