The Challenge

To support Belgium’s energy transition and enhance grid flexibility, ENGIE initiated the development of a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) near the Vilvoorde Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) plant. The challenge was to design and implement a high-performance storage facility capable of stabilizing the grid, managing fluctuations in renewable energy production, and ensuring reliable electricity delivery in a context of increasing demand and decarbonization targets.

The Solution

Tractebel has been entrusted with the Owner’s Engineering mission from the outset of the project. The team completed the basic design in 2025 and is currently supervising the construction phase. Tractebel’s multidisciplinary expertise ensures that the BESS integrates seamlessly with the existing energy infrastructure, meets technical and regulatory standards, and delivers optimal performance. The engineering scope includes electrical design, grid connection studies, and coordination of civil works, with a strong focus on safety, reliability, and long-term maintainability.

The Impact

Once operational, the BESS will significantly improve grid resilience and stability by providing essential services such as frequency regulation, peak shaving, and reserve capacity. It will enable the power grid to better withstand and recover from disruptions, support the integration of intermittent renewable sources, and contribute to Belgium’s climate and energy goals. Tractebel’s involvement ensures the delivery of a robust and future-proof energy asset that strengthens the country’s low-carbon infrastructure.
