The Challenge
Creating a complete value chain for “Power to H2” to be used in electric forklifts, replacing diesel forklifts, presents a significant challenge. This involves developing an integrated system that efficiently produces, stores, and distributes hydrogen as a clean energy source, ensuring hydrogen-powered forklifts operate reliably and cost-effectively. The challenge includes establishing robust production facilities for green hydrogen, creating efficient storage solutions, and developing a reliable distribution network, while adapting forklift technology to utilize hydrogen fuel cells effectively. This comprehensive approach aims to reduce carbon emissions, improve operational efficiency, and promote sustainability in material handling operations.
The Solution
The solution involves an EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) project to establish a complete “Power to H2” value chain. This includes the installation of a photovoltaic plant to generate renewable energy, a water treatment system to provide the necessary input for hydrogen production, and systems for hydrogen production, compression, and storage. Additionally, the project encompasses the deployment of electric forklifts powered by hydrogen fuel cells, replacing traditional diesel forklifts and promoting a sustainable, zero-emission material handling solution.
The Impact
Tractebel’s involvement in the project has led to significant advancements. By utilizing wastewater from mining operations for the H2 plant, the process releases only oxygen into the atmosphere. The hydrogen fuel cells in the forklifts can be fully recharged in just 3 to 5 minutes, providing around 8 hours of operation. This quick charging time is more efficient than conventional electric batteries, ensuring smooth and continuous logistics operations. Moreover, this technology has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by 24 to 57 tons annually, making the operation more sustainable and environmentally friendly.
This pioneering project would not have been possible without the support and dedication of the entire team. We have gained a wealth of invaluable experience, which we hope to apply to the growth of hydrogen in Chile and around the world. We will approach our next projects with renewed enthusiasm, reinforcing our commitment to supporting customers in achieving their decarbonization goals.
