The Challenge
The mission to adapt the Waste and Tailings Stack presented a formidable challenge due to the diverse materials it now receives, including filtered and dredged tailings from nearby mining dams. This variety, each with distinct geotechnical properties, necessitated a highly adaptable and technically robust project to modify the stack structure to its new operational reality.
The complexity of this adaptation project was further compounded by the need to balance multiple operational and geotechnical variables. The stack’s established history of operation required thorough investigation of its foundation to ensure safety and viability for continued development. This scenario exemplifies the intricate nature of engineering evolving stacks, where each phase demands precise, dynamic solutions.
The Solution
Tractebel’s solution for the adaptation of the Tailings and Waste Stack involved a comprehensive and multi-faceted approach. The project began with the conceptual design of the stack, followed by the basic and detailed design for extending bottom drains and addressing erosion issues. Recovery of contact drains and technical monitoring of drain installation were crucial steps to ensure effective water management and structural integrity.
Additionally, Tractebel implemented a Trade-Off Project for foundation reinforcements and developed a detailed design for the West Stack. The creation of a geological and geotechnical model of the foundation was essential for understanding the site’s characteristics. The project also included basic design elements for the stack and technical monitoring of a complementary investigation campaign, culminating in the updating of the geological model to reflect new data and insights. This holistic approach ensured the stack’s adaptation was both safe and sustainable.
The Impact
Tractebel’s involvement in the project led to significant improvements in the quality of waste disposal, ensuring that the process was more efficient and environmentally sound. Their solutions aligned perfectly with the client’s strategic planning and operational safety requirements, enhancing the overall safety and reliability of the stack.
Moreover, Tractebel optimized the waste operation and disposal process, resulting in smoother and more effective management. They also improved and guaranteed the hydraulic safety of the structure, addressing critical water management issues. The dynamic approach in daily actions further refined the stacking process, making it more adaptable and responsive to ongoing challenges.
To develop this major project of high technical and contextual complexity, our team sought maximum integration between engineers, hydrologists, geologists, designers and consultants, ensuring that each decision was based on rigorous technical, regulatory and sustainable criteria. The project premises required extensive investigations and tests to understand the foundation, geotechnical behavior of materials, environmental conditions, in addition to strategic planning based on actions to ensure the operational efficiency and safety of the project. This project confirms our vocation for highly complex projects, where technical mastery, clear communication between multidisciplinary fronts and commitment to excellence become decisive differentiators.
