The history of our presence in Belgium
Tractebel’s roots trace back to 1862 in Belgium, culminating in the merger of Tractionel and Electrobel in 1986. A pioneer in energy, it contributed to iconic projects like the nuclear plants at Doel and Tihange, the CCGT power station in Drogenbos, and the LNG terminal in Zeebrugge.
In infrastructure, Tractebel played a vital role in Antwerp and Brussels metros, the Sart-Tilman University, and the Sidmar steel plant near the Ghent–Terneuzen Canal. It became a co-shareholder in IMDC in 1986, specializing in marine and water management solutions.
The founding of Technum in 1995 bolstered Tractebel’s infrastructure contributions, with key projects like the Antwerp Mobility Master Plan and Brussels’ EU Parliament buildings. Renamed Tractebel in 2016, it continues to deliver major achievements across energy, water, and infrastructure, including the Seine-Scheldt Canal, Belwind offshore wind farm, and Zeebrugge’s LNG terminal expansion.
