The Challenge

To meet growing energy demands and improve grid flexibility, India is expanding its hydropower infrastructure. The construction of the Tehri Pumped Storage Power Plant (PSP) is a key component of this strategy, enabling the Tehri Hydropower Complex to operate as a major peak-load station with a total installed capacity of 2400 MW. The challenge was to ensure the successful development of this complex project, from tendering to commissioning, while maintaining high technical standards and knowledge transfer.

The Solution

Tractebel provided end-to-end technical support for the Tehri PSP project. This included the preparation and submission of complete pre-qualification and tender documents for the EPC contract, assistance with bid clarifications, evaluation of offers, and contract award. During the execution phase, Tractebel reviewed designs, studies, and drawings, ensuring compliance and quality up to commissioning. The project also included training and knowledge transfer to local stakeholders, reinforcing long-term operational capacity.

The Impact

Once commissioned in 2025, the Tehri PSP will deliver 1000 MW of flexible energy, significantly enhancing grid stability and peak-load management. Tractebel’s involvement ensured that the project progressed efficiently and met international standards. The initiative supports India’s energy transition by integrating large-scale renewable energy with reliable storage and dispatch capabilities.
