The Challenge

Architect Dominique Perrault’s visionary project for the new Longchamp racecourse in Paris involved the complete transformation of a historic site into a modern, multifunctional venue. The challenge lay in designing a large-scale mixed steel-concrete structure that would offer exceptional visibility of the track, ensure transparency of volumes, and integrate seamlessly with the preserved 1921 grandstand—all while meeting contemporary safety and regulatory standards.

The Solution

Tractebel provided full project management services, covering both the design and execution phases. This included structural and foundation engineering, asbestos removal, and demolition works. The new grandstand—160 meters long and 30 meters wide—was constructed alongside an elevated pedestrian esplanade, ground-floor pavilions, and various smaller buildings. The project required advanced structural studies and coordination across multiple disciplines. Its architectural and engineering excellence was recognized with the 6th Eiffel Award in 2020 in the “Architecture and Engineering” category, in partnership with Dominique Perrault Architecture.

The Impact

The redevelopment has revitalized the Longchamp racecourse, preserving its historic character while introducing modern functionality and aesthetics. With 54,000 m² of demolished space, 9,000 m² of major redevelopment, and 55,000 m² of new construction, the site now offers a world-class venue for racing and events. The project stands as a landmark example of how engineering and architecture can come together to transform heritage sites into dynamic, future-ready spaces.
