A vertical ship lift has been constructed which allows the transfer of the ships at the Three Gorges Hydropower Project in the People's Republic of China. The ship lift uses a toothed rack drive (drive shaft), with a nut port rotary locking rod spindle as a safety device. The lift has a maximum lift height of 113 m and can accommodate a 3,000 ton passenger ship, which can be transferred from the upstream side to the downstream side - and vice versa - in less than one hour.
