Upper Tamakoshi HEP, one of the national pride projects and the largest hydropower plant in operation in Nepal, is located in Bigu Rural Municipality, ward no.1 of Dolakha district in Bagmati Province of Nepal. The project lies at the base of Higher Himalayas, on the Tamakoshi River in Koshi River Basin, about 100 km north-east of Kathmandu and 8 km south of the Chinese Tibetan border. The project is a daily peaking run-of-the river project of installed capacity 456 MW with a live storage volume sufficient for four hours daily peaking operation in the dry seasons. The project will generate 2,281 GWh of energy annually with the available gross head of 822 m and design discharge of 66 m3/s.
