Royal inauguration of Mareterra in Monaco

On December 4, the Royal Family of Monaco officially inaugurated Mareterra, an exceptional district that expands Monaco's territory by three percent. As Owner’s Engineer, our Urban teams contributed their expertise to meet complex technical, environmental and logistical challenges.

With an investment of two billion euros, Mareterra redefines sustainable urban planning on a global scale. This colossal project, led by SAM L'Anse du Portier, embodies an innovative and sustainable solution to the challenges of regional development.

A visionary project for the Principality of Monaco

Designed by leading architects Valode & Pistre Architectes, Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW) and landscape architects Michel Desvigne Paysage, Mareterra offers exceptional infrastructure:

- 60,000 m² of private housing and shops
- A marina with 30 moorings
- Three luxury residential districts
- Public gardens for relaxation
- 680 parking spaces
- A 3,500 m² extension to the Grimaldi Forum

Tractebel’s mandate as Owner’s Engineer

As Owner’s Engineer, our Urban teams in Monaco, France and Belgium contributed their expertise to meet complex challenges on several strategic engineering packages:

- Structure and foundations
- Seismic study of the entire district, including maritime infrastructures
- Mobility
- Accessibility, parking, urban logistics
- Environmental impact study
- Energy efficiency, energy savings and renewable energies
- Eco-design and low-carbon construction
- Heating network

Complex feats of architecture in a seismic zone

The development includes two buildings designed by RPBW that represent boats in dry dock, each featuring an overhang section jutting out from the main structures. Of the two 23m cantilevers at either end of the buildings, the first 10m are built with reinforced concrete that, through embedded steel beams, transmits traction directly to the central reinforced concrete cores. The next 10m is composed of a ladder beam structure embedded in concrete, with reinforced concrete floors. The final three metres are made up of metal sections called “fingers” anchored to the ladder beam structure.

During construction, the cantilevers were continuously monitored for deformation and settlement at the level of the piles.
