New hydropower plant to provide round-the-clock clean energy for northern India

16 Feb 2024

Tractebel’s hydro experts in India are wrapping up a study for a 1,800 MW hydropower plant in Rajasthan. The Shahpur pumped storage plant will bring the country a step closer to its ambitious renewable energy goals.

The Shahpur pumped storage project is a standalone off-stream, closed loop hydroelectric plant that will consist of both an upper and lower reservoir of 1.01 thousand million cubic feet each. The lower reservoir, located about 500 m from the Shahbad Kuno River, will be filled through the Hanotiya Barrage, which will be constructed across the river. A pit type surface powerhouse will be built between the two reservoirs and connected with a water conductor system, comprising a headrace pipe, vertical pressure shafts, and horizontal pressure tunnels.

Tractebel nears completion of detailed project report
Tractebel’s hydro experts in India are providing consultancy services for the preparation of the detailed project report (DPR) for the project’s technical and economic clearance from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) and other authorities. The scope of work includes finalizing the layout of the project, conducting hydrology and power potential studies, and preparing Stage-1 DPR for submission to the CEA, DPR for financial requirements, the geological chapter for the Geological Survey of India, and the final DPR for submission to the CEA. The mandate is expected to be completed in June 2024.

“Tractebel plays a key role in the detailed project report through our contribution to the studies, preparation and techno-economic clearance. With its 10,800 MWh of energy storage to support round-the-clock renewable power, the Shahpur pumped storage project will contribute to India’s energy security while reducing its dependence on fossil fuels. Our team is proud that this project will maximize green energy supply.”
