Multimetric rates to measure project impacts

14 Aug 2020

Imagine a tool, based on various metrics, from the physical, biotic and social variables, in an integrated and holistic way, that allows you to compare socio-environmental changes before and after the implementation of projects. The good news is that this tool already exists, and is called Social-Environmental Sustainability Index (ISSA, in Portuguese abreviation).

Adapted by Tractebel's Environment team, the index is applied annually in an unprecedent way, in a stretch named Volta Grande do Xingu, downstream of the Belo Monte hydroelectric dam, the third largest in the world. The solution tracks information about issues as diverse as water quality, navigability, fishing, aquatic fauna and living conditions of the population

The index monitors the behavior of the data over time and can take into account the intricate environmental interactions. It also allows the assessment of any changes identified, quantitatively and directly. Thus, it is a great tool to guide decision making regarding the allocation of resources for the mitigation actions defined in the environmental licensing of the hydroelectric plant.

The Socio-Environmental Sustainability Index is easily customized for other types of projects and all results can be consulted on an interactive dashboard, in which it is possible to browse the data, analyzing the patterns found over time in different types of graphics and tables.
