Tractebel helps improving urban mobility in Florianopolis

02 Apr 2019

Tractebel will support the Superintendency for the development of Florianópolis’ Metropolitan Region (SUDERF) for the planification of a clean and integrated public transport system in Florianopolis.

Under the sponsorship of FELICITY* (an initiative of GIZ and the European Investment Bank), Tractebel, in association with Laborelec will support the Superintendency for the development of Florianópolis’ Metropolitan Region (SUDERF) for the planification of a clean and integrated public transport system in Florianópolis.

The ambition of the SUDERF is to integrate the transport systems of eight municipalities into one energy efficient transit alliance and renew the current bus fleet of Florianópolis, providing services to almost 1.19 million inhabitants. The current fleet counts approximately 450 buses with diesel engines, and should gradually be replaced by cleaner technologies. Furthermore, the project includes an operational control center, new bus depots, digital information and payment systems and two terminals.

The mission given to Tractebel consists of benchmarking clean bus technologies and the associated infrastructure options by conducting a total cost of ownership (TCO) analysis for the specific needs of the SUDERF. This life-cycle analysis will help to mitigate the financial and technical uncertainties related to clean buses and facilitate the investment decisions.

Knowing that the transport sector in Brazil accounts for 46% of all energy related emissions of greenhouse gases and that 80% of the Brazilian population live in cities, the project will also contribute to a better air quality within the City of Florianopolis.

* FELICITY in a nutshell:
“Financing Energy for Low-carbon Investment- Cities Advisory Facility” is an initiative of GIZ and the European Investment Bank (EIB) to support low-carbon urban infrastructure projects that have significant impact on economic development. As a project preparation facility, FELICITY offers technical assistance to cities in designing and structuring their infrastructure investment projects. FELICITY prioritizes the interest of cities and incorporates the perspective of international financiers.
