Re-imagining a flyover’s future

23 May 2018

The B401 flyover has been a feature of Belgium’s Ghent since the 1970s. Now public discussion is helping dream up its future.

The flyover brings cars directly into the city centre resulting in health and congestion issues. A sustainable future requires systemic change but that will take years. So today, Tractebel is working with the Brussels office 51N4E to identify a transition process. Not a final plan, but an exploration, to find a path towards a climate-robust and healthy Ghent.

Questions being asked include: How does the ageing flyover fit into future urban mobility? What potential is there for the urban fabric? How does this space strengthen urban ecology and what possibilities are there for reuse?

Inspired by this transition project, all kinds of stakeholders have become involved: public authorities including city services, AWV (Regional Road Administration), and De Lijn (Public Transport Operator); politicians, and residents of nearby districts. Various workshops and initiatives have provided the framework for this co-creation.

Tractebel is excited to be part of this forward-looking project. Coming up with new possibilities to inspire new solutions can lead to fruitful new collaborations. Old perceptions of a monofunctional space are being reversed.
