The Challenge

The Zeebrugge back port area is expanding. The Port wants to assess the possible impact by various forms of nuisance, particularly noise and light pollution on local residents. A key challenge lies in objectively identifying and quantifying both current and future environmental impacts—up to 2030—while addressing public complaints and ensuring that mitigation strategies are both realistic and scientifically grounded.

The Solution

Tractebel performs the environmental study by conducting a comprehensive impact assessment focused on noise and light disturbance and other types of nuisances. The team combines document analysis, complaint screening, and targeted noise measurements to map both “as-is” and “to-be” nuisance scenarios. Based on this analysis, Tractebel proposes technical and general mitigation measures, ranging from source-specific interventions to broader strategies aimed at improving environmental quality. The study also integrates spatial, health, and biodiversity expertise to ensure a holistic and multidisciplinary approach.

The Impact

Tractebel’s work provides a scientifically substantiated foundation for policy decisions and stakeholder dialogue.
The study enhances awareness of nuisance, supports the objective data collection and supports the development of targeted, feasible measures to improve the quality of life for residents near the port. By combining technical precision with a holistic vision, the project contributes to a more sustainable and socially responsible port development strategy.
