The Challenge

The client operates one of the most carbon-intensive facilities in its portfolio, primarily due to hydrocarbon combustion for heat generation. To align with sustainability goals and regulatory pressures, the client sought a viable alternative energy source to offset emissions and decarbonize its industrial operations. The challenge was to identify a technically and economically feasible solution that could be integrated into existing infrastructure without compromising operational efficiency.

The Solution

Tractebel conducted a comprehensive feasibility study to assess the potential of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) as a decarbonization solution. The study included the definition of suitability requirements and decarbonization scenarios, down-selection of best-in-class SMR designs, and prioritization of potential sites in accordance with IAEA NS-R-3 standards. A detailed project roadmap and schedule were developed, along with technical integration studies, including thermodynamic modeling. This approach ensured a robust evaluation of risks, opportunities, and implementation pathways.

The Impact

Tractebel successfully identified a technological solution and outlined an industrial roadmap to enhance the sustainability and profitability of the client’s asset. The study provides a clear direction for future investment and implementation, positioning the client to reduce emissions significantly while maintaining energy reliability. This project highlights Tractebel’s expertise in nuclear innovation and its commitment to supporting industrial decarbonization through advanced energy solutions.
