The Challenge

Munich’s existing S-Bahn trunk line, which runs west to east through the city, has reached its capacity limits. Bundling several lines through a single tunnel has created a bottleneck, especially as passenger numbers continue to rise in the growing metropolitan region. To address this, a second tunnel is being constructed parallel to the original line. The western section of the project includes the approach from Laim station to the new tunnel portal at Donnersbergerstraße, requiring a complete reconstruction of Laim S-Bahn station and complex overpass structures to connect with the existing network—all while maintaining uninterrupted operations.

The Solution

Tractebel provided comprehensive planning services across nearly all service phases, covering railway and road transport infrastructure, civil engineering, superstructure design, drainage systems, and utility crossings. The scope also included property planning for engineering structures, construction logistics in a dense urban environment, and coordination of ongoing operations at Munich Central Station. Specialist contributions were integrated across control and safety technology, telecommunications, traction power systems, noise and vibration protection, fire safety, landscape management, and environmental compatibility—ensuring a holistic and future-proof solution.

The Impact

The Second S-Bahn Trunk Line will significantly expand Munich’s environmentally friendly public transport capacity, preparing the city for future mobility demands. Beyond increasing throughput, the integration of digital technologies will enhance system reliability and operational efficiency.
