Tractebel plays a key role in the ODIN project, Offshore Digitalization and Hybrid Energy INtegration, bringing its offshore engineering and digital expertise to an ambitious initiative supporting the next generation of offshore energy systems in Belgium and Europe.

Tractebel’s role: enabling smarter offshore operations

Within the consortium, Tractebel leads Work Package 1, dedicated to automated test services for commissioning and remote maintenance tasks: a central contribution that directly supports safer, faster and more efficient offshore operations.

Drawing on its proven expertise in offshore engineering, asset management and digital solutions, Tractebel is developing approaches to streamline testing and maintenance processes for complex offshore installations. The aim is to reduce operational complexity, improve reliability, and support the cost-effective deployment of future offshore energy infrastructure.

The project is being executed by Tractebel’s Belgian teams, combining local innovation capacity with the company’s broader experience in offshore energy projects and system integration.

Driving innovation in offshore energy systems

ODIN brings together leading industry players and research institutions, including Siemens, Laborelec, Parkwind, KU Leuven/EnergyVille, E-BO Enterprises, Flux50 and De Blauwe Cluster. The project aims to accelerate the deployment of offshore renewables, while enhancing system reliability and economic performance. Supported by VLAIO (Flanders Innovation & Entrepreneurship), ODIN began in March 2024. It is expected to run through March 2027, with a total budget of over €2.1 million.

The project focuses on developing and validating innovative solutions combining:

  • Offshore digitalization
  • Hybrid energy systems
  • Large-scale energy storage, including offshore wind turbines, floating PV and battery energy storage systems

By integrating these elements, the project seeks to reduce the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) of offshore wind, while increasing the flexibility and resilience of the energy system.

Key objectives include:

  • Accelerating offshore energy deployment through automated testing
  • Improving reliability via advanced asset management and maintenance
  • Enhancing grid flexibility and economic performance

Supporting Europe’s energy transition

By advancing offshore digitalization and hybrid energy integration, ODIN contributes to strengthening Belgium’s and Europe’s leadership in renewable energy.

The project’s outcomes are expected to play a key role in shaping future offshore energy networks, making them more flexible, resilient and economically viable.

ODIN is a key step towards more intelligent and integrated offshore energy systems. By developing automated testing solutions, we are helping to make offshore operations safer, faster and more cost-efficient, ultimately supporting the large-scale deployment of renewable energy.
