TA : Technical Advisory Service for 4 BESS Project of 500MW/ 2000MWh in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Challenge

Saudi Arabia is accelerating the transformation of its power sector, with ambitious plans to expand renewable energy generation and develop 48 GWh of energy storage capacity by 2030. The G1 Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Projects represent an important step in this transition, providing the large-scale storage infrastructure needed to support the integration of increasing volumes of renewable electricity. Developing these standalone BESS facilities requires robust technical specifications, optimised system design and carefully coordinated engineering to ensure effective integration with the country’s electricity infrastructure.

Solution

Tractebel provides comprehensive engineering and technical advisory services for the G1 BESS Projects, supporting their development from tender preparation through Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) and basic engineering. Its scope includes reviewing the SPPC Request for Proposal and site studies, preparing technical specifications for BESS OEMs and Balance of Plant contractors, and developing the technical deliverables required for the tender process. Tractebel also supports techno-economic modelling, technical bid evaluation, operation and maintenance planning, overall bid compilation, and the optimisation of the BESS and associated power evacuation infrastructure.

Impact

As the first phase of Saudi Arabia’s large-scale battery storage programme, the G1 BESS Projects will provide essential flexibility to support the country’s growing renewable energy capacity. Large-scale battery storage will help strengthen grid stability and facilitate the integration of solar, wind and other renewable energy sources into the national electricity system. In doing so, the projects will contribute to Saudi Arabia’s wider energy transition objectives and its ambition to generate 50% of its electricity from renewable sources under Vision 2030.
