Polavaram Hydroelectric Project (960 MW)

Challenge

The Polavaram Irrigation Project on the Godavari River in Andhra Pradesh is one of India’s largest and most strategically important multipurpose water infrastructure developments. Designated as a National Project by the Government of India, it includes a major hydropower component with an installed capacity of 960 MW, generated by 12 × 80 MW turbine-generator units. Designed to harness the substantial water flows of the Godavari during monsoon and regulated release periods, the surface powerhouse required specialised engineering expertise encompassing geological assessment, hydraulic and structural design, and the integration of electro-mechanical systems.

Solution

Tractebel provided basic and detailed engineering services for the hydropower component of the Polavaram Irrigation Project. Drawing on its multidisciplinary hydropower expertise, Tractebel developed engineering solutions for the powerhouse and associated infrastructure, addressing the geological, hydraulic, structural and electro-mechanical requirements of the scheme. This integrated engineering approach supported the development of a robust design adapted to the scale and technical complexity of this major multipurpose project.
