The Challenge
To support Belgium’s energy transition and improve grid flexibility, B-STOR is developing a large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) near the Duferco steel plant in La Louvière. The site’s industrial setting offers strategic advantages for grid connection and land availability, but also presents technical and logistical challenges. The goal is to deliver a high-capacity storage facility that can stabilize the grid, support renewable integration, and provide fast-response services in a region with growing energy demands.
The Solution
Tractebel has been entrusted with the Owner’s Engineering mission from the outset of the project. The basic design was completed in 2025, and Tractebel is currently supervising the construction phase. Our multidisciplinary teams are overseeing all technical aspects, including electrical design, civil works, grid connection coordination, and safety compliance. The project integrates advanced battery technologies and infrastructure tailored to industrial-scale performance, ensuring reliability, efficiency, and long-term maintainability.
The Impact
Once operational, the BESS will play a critical role in enhancing grid resilience and stability. It will provide essential services such as frequency regulation, peak shaving, and reserve capacity, helping the power grid withstand and recover from disruptions while managing fluctuations in renewable energy supply. Tractebel’s involvement ensures that the project meets the highest standards of engineering and sustainability, contributing to Belgium’s low-carbon energy future.
