The Challenge
Karl-Marx-Allee is a key artery in Berlin’s main road network and a historically significant urban ensemble. As part of the ‘Planwerk Innenstadt’ (Inner City Development Plan), the section between Otto-Braun-Straße/Alexanderstraße and Strausberger Platz—spanning approximately 790 meters—is undergoing a comprehensive redevelopment. The challenge lies in modernizing the infrastructure while preserving the avenue’s unique architectural heritage and integrating green spaces and existing tree populations.
The Solution
Tractebel is delivering both basic and specialized project management services for the planning, preparation, and optional execution of the construction works. This includes technical review of draft planning documents (BPU), evaluation of execution and tender documents, and coordination with property and specialist planners. A key aspect of the project is close collaboration with the State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments to ensure that all interventions respect the historic character of the area. The redesign encompasses road traffic areas and all ancillary zones up to the road boundaries, integrating green infrastructure and enhancing urban resilience.
The Impact
The renovation of Karl-Marx-Allee will elevate the quality of life for residents and improve safety for all users. Enlarged infiltration areas will boost climate resilience, while the preservation of the avenue’s architectural identity ensures its continued cultural significance. This project exemplifies Tractebel’s ability to balance urban modernization with heritage conservation, contributing to a more sustainable and livable Berlin.
